Temporary Tag Paperwork Checklist for a First-Time Request
Requesting your first temporary tag? Start with the VIN on the vehicle, a record showing how you got it, and the forms required for your specific request. Use this checklist before you submit anything or make plans to drive.

Before you request a temporary tag
- Copy the VIN from the vehicle. Write down the VIN, year, make, model, and color. Compare the VIN on the vehicle with the VIN on your title or purchase record. If one character differs, resolve the discrepancy with the seller or issuing office before submitting.
- Gather your purchase or ownership record. Start with the signed title or bill of sale you received. Check that the buyer and seller details are legible and that the vehicle information matches. If the seller’s name differs from the name on the title, ask what additional records are needed before relying on the bill of sale.
- Use the form supplied for your request. If your 24HourTags instructions call for a notarized power of attorney, use the supplied version and wait to sign until you are with the notary. Before leaving, check the required signatures and notary fields. Follow the instructions for submitting a copy or sending an original.
- Review your upload before sending. Keep all pages in order and make sure the VIN, dates, signatures, and any notary stamp are readable. Use the submission instructions for your order and keep a copy of what you send.
Which ownership documents will the issuer accept?
Check with the issuing office for your situation. For example, Flathead County, Montana lists a signed bill of sale, a properly assigned title, or current out-of-state registration in your name in certain circumstances. If your title is missing or still with a lender, explain that up front so the issuer can tell you what it will accept.
Before driving, check the issued permit
Check that the permit has been issued for your vehicle, review its printed expiration date and confirm where and how you can use it. Montana MVD directs motorists to display its temporary registration permit at the rear plate location in the sleeve provided by the issuer. A quote, payment receipt, or upload confirmation does not give you permission to drive.
