Lost your title? You may still have options.

Missing paperwork doesn't always mean the end of the road. The legitimate path depends on the vehicle's title history, ownership evidence and applicable state registration rules.
Missing title: identify the gap in the ownership records
Start by finding out whether the certificate was lost, the prior transfer was never completed, or the ownership history is incomplete. Gather the documents that actually exist and request review where needed. A VIN inspection can verify the vehicle’s identity but does not establish ownership or guarantee a title.
First, determine why the title is missing
A lost certificate, an untransferred prior title, a certificate of origin and a vehicle with no clear ownership chain are different problems. The appropriate solution depends on which one applies.
What is a VIN inspection?
Some cases require an inspection to confirm the vehicle identification number and supporting ownership paperwork. A VIN inspection does not by itself establish legal ownership or guarantee registration.
Can a Montana registration solve every missing-title case?
No. Some qualifying situations can be reviewed using Montana documentation procedures, but restrictions apply, and some cases require additional evidence or cannot proceed.
What should I prepare?
Gather any bill of sale, previous registration, vehicle identification number, seller details, and available title or certificate-of-origin documents. We'll advise which documents are relevant after reviewing your situation.
Why a VIN inspection may not be enough
A vehicle-identification inspection checks identifying information, not the history of legal ownership. If a seller cannot provide a valid title, the buyer may need a replacement title, documented chain of ownership, a certificate of origin, or other evidence required by the reviewing agency. A signed inspection alone does not resolve a dispute or guarantee a registration.
Questions to resolve before paying
Who last held the title, is a lien recorded, and is the vehicle legally transferable? Keep records showing the purchase and ask the appropriate titling authority about the applicable process. Some cases are ineligible for the registration services we offer, so request a review if your documents are uncertain.

Frequently asked questions
Does a bill of sale automatically replace a missing title?
No. It may be supporting evidence, but the appropriate ownership and registration process depends on the vehicle and its records.
Can a VIN inspection guarantee a title?
No. An inspection confirms identifying information; it does not guarantee ownership acceptance, titling or registration.
